LATAM Airlines Group (‘LATAM’) has announced the launch of a new, non-stop service between Melbourne and Santiago, Chile – expanding the airline’s offering in Australia and widening access to the most comprehensive network in Latin America.
From 5 October 2017, LATAM will operate three non-stop flights per week between Melbourne and Santiago, Chile – one of the airline’s principal hubs – that offers onward connections to an unrivalled 124 destinations throughout Chile and the region, including direct services to major cities such as São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Lima, Bogota and Quito.
The new LATAM Melbourne-Santiago flight will be the first ever non-stop service between the two cities as well as the only direct connection between Melbourne and Latin America, significantly reducing travel times.
“2016 has been a special year for LATAM in Australia, not only with the launch of our new brand in April, but now with the introduction of a new route, which enables us to offer our customers more choice and greater convenience,” said Patricio Aylwin, Managing Director Asia Pacific, LATAM Airlines Group.
“By connecting Melbourne with Chile’s economic and cultural centre – and also a key gateway to the rest of Latin America – this new route will help support the growth of tourism and commerce between the two regions. We’re confident that passengers on both sides of the Pacific will welcome the wealth of attractions, cultures and cuisines that this service will bring even closer,” Mr Aylwin added.
LATAM currently operates seven flights per week from Sydney to Santiago (via Auckland). In 2015, the airline introduced the Boeing 787-9 aircraft to the route, increasing capacity by 27 per cent. In total, LATAM transports approximately 190,000 passengers per year between Latin America and Oceania.
With the Melbourne-Santiago flight, operated by Boeing 787-9 aircraft, the airline group estimates that it will transport an additional 75,000 passengers between the two continents each year.
When operations commence on 5 October 2017, LATAM Airlines Group flight LA804 will depart Melbourne (MEL) at 19:55 (local time) on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, arriving in Santiago (SCL) at 19:00 the same day (local time), with a flight time of 13 hours 5 minutes. The return flight (LA805) will depart Santiago at 12:55 (local time) on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, arriving in Melbourne at 17:55 (local time) the next day, with a flight time of 15 hours.*
